Kic(a) Some Arse!

Fitness enthusiast Aneesha Labroo talks about her baby Kica Active - a new line of activewear and her passion for both fitness and fashion.
Tell us a little about yourself and your project Kica Active?
I studied psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and then spent three and a half years in New York in the advertising industry as a brand strategist. A city obsessed with being fit, there are so many stores that are dedicated purely to activewear. Girls would come to the gym after a long day at work impeccably dressed, and over the weekend you’d often see them in these outfits at brunch, shopping, or just on the streets. This sparked the discussion amongst my friends of how there has been a noticeable shift in people being more aware of their fitness and health in India and that how the market is being dominated by international brands that tend to be expensive, and not catered specifically for the Indian customer. The thought that there was a huge opportunity for a good, affordable, Indian activewear clothing brand remained with me when I moved back to Delhi in September 2016. After conducting a full marketing study on the activewear market and available brands, I identified a gap - stylish and high quality products at an affordable price point. Born out of the need to bridge this gap was Kica.

How important is fitness to you?
Fitness has always been a part of my life, whether it's playing endless amounts of football while growing up or generally being pretty active on a day-to-day basis. However, in the last few years I’ve realised the importance of fitness not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. The only way I can have a full productive day (of whatever it may be) is by eating clean and working out. It’s a priority, and something that I’m sure I will never change for the rest of my life.

"Age isn’t a factor when it comes to fitness.
It’s about listening to your body,
and knowing your limits."

What defines fitness for you?
Fitness is a combination of diet and exercise. For me it's eating well, nourishing your body with the right nutrients, staying active and exercising smartly.

Do fitness and fashion go hand in hand?
Working out makes you feel great, physically and mentally. Looking good while doing it, only enhances that feeling further.

Who are your fitness icons?
Kourtney Kardashian. I know.. she’s a Kardashian, but you can’t deny how hard she works for her body. She’s a mother of 3, 38-years-old, and looks absolutely insane. I love that she isn’t afraid to use weights, understands the importance of strength and keeps experimenting with her workouts.

Does Fitness vary for women in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. If yes then how?
Age isn’t a factor when it comes to fitness. It’s about listening to your body and knowing your limits.

What next?
My goal is to spread awareness about Kica and what we stand for, which is to inspire women to take on the journey to a fit and healthy life, to push themselves, and go the extra mile. Next stop is Mumbai.

If you were to go for a fitness holiday, where would you go and why?
Phuket! Runs on the beach, water sports/activities, gyms overlooking the water and sunset swims - it's the perfect holiday. Also, there's endless amount of motivation to stay fit combined with copious amounts of good food and alcohol. Also, I want to learn how to surf and base my holidays around it.

How does one stay fit while travelling?
Running is honestly the best way to discover a new city. I always do 2-3 runs, it’s such a great way to get a quick glimpse of the whole place. I love to check out gym classes in different metros, as each city has it’s own latest workout trends. Also just discovering a city involves staying active and being on your feet. On a work schedule, 20-30 minutes of intense cardio will keep you on track. If you stay active, eating and drinking what you like is never going to be a problem. Moderation is key to staying fit.
